Nicotiana excelsior (Solanaceae)

common names: pulandu, balandu, pulanto, piturr probably a corruption of pituri.

habit: Large leafed herbaceous shrub.

foliage: Large dull green smooth leaves, stalks produced downward.

distribution: Rocky areas of arid central Australia.

notes: The leaves of this species has been used in the same way as those of Duboisia hopwoodii or 'Pituri', as a narcotic and stimulant.
The leaves are dried and mixed with ash from Acacia or Eucalyptus species. Then chewed for fatigue and as a stimulant and social 'drug'.
This species is reported to contain nicotine and nor-nicotine in the leaves.

common names: ingulba, mingulba

habit: Large leaved herb to shrub with softly hairy leaves.

foliage: Leaves large and softly hairy but not sticky, blunt apex and don't have a leaf stalk.

flowers: White flowers at the end of the branches.

distribution: Inland central Australian species, central NT to W Qld.

notes: Leaves of this species is also reported to be used in the same fashion as Duboisia hopwoodii (Pituri) and N. excelsior.
Leaf reported to contain up to 1.1% nicotine.
