A more recent account, less touched by "all that was zany" in Ludlow's literary background, of the ingestion of large amounts of hashish (in this case true hashish -- about six grams worth, administered in "a deliberate overdose") is given by Dr. Andrew Weil in The Natural Mind:

The effects of the drug were felt within forty minutes and were pleasant but strong for about a half-hour.... ....I would not willingly repeat the experience.
